History

Hoffenheim is a German professional football club based in the village of Hoffenheim, a suburb of Sinsheim in Baden-Württemberg. The club was founded in 1899 as a gymnastics club, but did not start playing football until 1910. The club rose from obscurity to the top flight of German football with the financial backing of software mogul and former player Dietmar Hopp, who invested millions of euros into the club since 2000. The club reached the Bundesliga for the first time in 2008 and has since established itself as a regular contender for European qualification. The club’s best finish was third place in 2017–18, which earned them a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time. Some of the club’s legendary players include Sejad Salihović, Vedad Ibišević, Roberto Firmino, Niklas Süle and Andrej Kramarić.

2022-23 season

The 2022-23 season was a mixed one for Hoffenheim, who finished 12th in the Bundesliga and failed to qualify for any European competition. The club also reached the round of 16 in the DFB-Pokal, where they lost to Borussia Dortmund. The club changed managers twice during the season, first sacking André Breitenreiter in February and then appointing Pellegrino Matarazzo as his successor. Matarazzo managed to steer the club away from the relegation zone, thanks to some impressive wins over Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt. The club’s top scorer was Andrej Kramarić, who netted 12 goals in all competitions.

2023-24 season

The 2023-24 season promises to be more exciting, as Hoffenheim have made some big changes in their squad and coaching staff. Matarazzo has brought in some new faces, such as Florian Grillitsch from Ajax, Kasper Dolberg from Nice, John Brooks from Benfica and Thomas Delaney from Sevilla. They also retained some of their key players, such as Oliver Baumann, Pavel Kadeřábek, Grischa Prömel and Vincenzo Grifo.
